You need to look no further than the slap in the face many soap opera fans got this summer when the long standing bedrock of day time tv flickered into a test pattern.
Even if you don’t know the show, you undoubtedly know the name: THE GUIDING LIGHT.
If you didn’t watch it, your momma might have. I can almost guarantee you her momma did.
The show signed off the air for the last time in mid September. For many women it was like waving good bye to a fantasy lover. Take a hike postman, this realtionship is done.
Loud and proud and entertaining, The Guiding Light had longevity that makes a fossil jealous. 15,7062 episodes. That is unbeliveable, when you think that there are 365 days in one year. 3,650 days in ten years. That’s a decade of existence and it doesn’t even get to sit at the grown up table with the Guiding Light.
The success of the franchise was story telling that had never previously catered to women. Advertisers loved it and the show was a hit.
But as the 80’s transitioned into the 90’s which slid into the next millennium, women hit the work force like never before. Suddenly ad dollars disappeared and the inevitable beaching of the great albetross.
