You know what’s crazy? I”ll tell you what’s crazy.
The world accusing a teenage girl of being a teenage boy. Now that’s crazy.
It all starts in Berlin at the track and field world championships. It’s here that South African teenager, Caster Semenya blew away the competition winning the 800 meter by such an astounding margin that people needed to come up with an explanation.
When Ben Johnson blew away everyone in the 100 meters a few Olympics ago. Everyone suspected he was on the juice. It turned out he was and he was banned forever.
But this is different. Ben Johnson looked like a man. Nobody told him to turn his head and cough while a panel of judges checked his manhood.
Semenya smiled and said, “Good, MAN.”
If I was her daddy, this public question would make me irate.
Call my little girl a man, and do it publicly? Man I’m going to bitch slap somebody. I would start with Charlie Gibson. I would pull his nostril hair and make his eyes water till he said sorry.
I think it’s crazy they even need to. I mean, how freaking rude? Maybe she’s just unattractive. And that begs the question? Is a woman who looks like a man – ugly? Or is that woman just masculine? But what if she looks like a good looking man? Is she an ugly woman who looks like a good looking man? Does that somehow make her good looking in an androgynous type of way?
According to published reports: Her dramatic improvement, muscular build and deep voice sparked speculation about her gender. Her father, grandmother and cousin dismissed speculation she is not a woman.
“She said to me she doesn’t see what the big deal is all about,” South Africa team manager Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said. “She believes it is God given talent and she will exercise it.”
Her father, Jacob, told the Sowetan newspaper: “She is my little girl. … I raised her and I have never doubted her gender. She is a woman and I can repeat that a million times.”
To make this story even more incendiary, the South African Athletic Federation is basically saying it’s a black thing.
“It would not be like that if it were some young girl from Europe,” Chuene told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “If it was a white child, she would be sitting somewhere with a psychologist, but this is an African child.”
I don’t know if she is singled out because she is African, but I definitely think it is rude. If you have suspicions, then test her. There are ways to know for sure, so test, privately, quietly.
