You know what’s crazy? I’ll tell you what’s crazy™
The Olympics in Sochi.
So far it’s been a yawner, on almost every level.
The opening ceremony was excessive, but for opening ceremonies, it was average in a “I saw this in London and China kind of way.”
The athletic events have been pedestrian. I think there are way too many events and too many days.
Luge and team skating. It’s tired. I don’t care.
I think the Olympics have been boring?
Boring to some is a good thing.
So far there have been no explosions or security issues to speak of.
The big news so far?
Double Toilets, spray painted grass and Olympic Village infrastructure deficiencies that make good Twitter pictures but not much else.
The biggest snafu? A snow flake at the opening ceremony didn’t transform into the 5th olympic ring.
American audiences saw this. Russian audiences didn’t.
It’s similar to a guest cursing on SNL and the curse word being omitted by the time the show airs on the west coast. It’s Hollywood, even in Russia.
I saw Snow-Flake-Gate on every news channel.
Breaking News: Ring remains a snow flake.
Come on?
I know that American – Russian relations are not good, but seriously; A snow flake didn’t transform? That’s news?
That’s like equating the Denver Broncos entire season to an opening Superbowl snap.
Wait that happened.
I try watching the Olympics.
I watched Guys Nordic Skiing for 4 hours and then shooting targets. It was like watching mud dry. Why is this a sport?
I watched American snow boarders prove the USA is rad! as we win two gold medals as of this writing.
I also watched the rained out ATT Golf Tournament. I am not sure what is more boring?
Rain and golfers not golfing or skiers skiing for four hours.
But a terror dome? Black Widow bombers?
So far so good.
There is a massive security force. We are told about 1,000’s of security personnel. But reporters admit, they have not seen one rifle or hand gun anywhere in the Olympic Village.
The controversy so far? Two protesters upset about Russia’s gay rights.
A serious issue? Sure. Two people – a protest?
Black Friday at Target is a bigger security issue.
ABC news contributor, Christine Brennan has covered 16 Olympics. “I’ve been here 1 week. security concerns are not front and center in my mind, and have not been since I landed. A snow flake malfunction? The big glitch? That would have been unthinkable a few months ago. It’s going pretty well.”
The security news is relentless. ABC’s Brian Ross reports “police killed five suspected terrorists attached to previous bomb attacks. It has echoes of 911 attacks on New York and Washington,” he says ominously.
The news shows me a crazy guy on a jet who reportedly broke into a cockpit. He was arrested. No bomb was found.
I hear from a terrorism expert, Seth Jones who says “the effort to put a bomb on an airplane in or around Sochi is something that the Russians and Americans are looking very closely at.”
I will hear the words “Islamic terrorists” at least 5 times.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad the words don’t match the reality so far. The predictions are dire. The “What if” scenarios are surreal.
So far it’s just a snow flake and boring snow sports.
Just 2 more weeks of this.
OMG
Life’s Crazy
