you know what’s crazy? I’ll tell you what’s crazy.™
An entire summer without football.
Thank God it’s back. No more reruns of the 1992 Championship game on the NFL channel.
I’m in a watering hole, salivating. My head is on a swivel.
I’ve got Titans Vs Saints preseason on one flat screen. I’ve got Vandy Vs South Carolina on the other. In front of me a Tecate with lime.
What more do I need?
I love pro football. I love college even more.
USC opens against Hawaii Saturday. I can’t wait to see how the Mighty Trojans do. Can they hang on to number 1? Will Matt Barkley win the Heisman? All good questions.
I think I love college because you matriculate there for 4 years. You probably vomit on a sidewalk in front of a frat house somewhere. If nothing else, you bleed school spirit. You learn the fight song. It’s like a secret handshake in an expensive club that eventually entitles you to put a bumper sticker on the back of your car. It’s not just your alma mater forever, it’s a student loan that never ends.
The Trojans play Saturday. So for now, on this Thursday night, the opening of the college season, I’ll take the Vandy Commodores.
Anchor Down as they say here in Music City. Or is that Commodore Up? I can never remember.
The black and gold has packed the stadium. The fan base is energized. This perenial SEC door mat has a little bite in their bark. You can see the pomp and pagentry in the stands. The crowd even looks angry. The game is on national tv. Nashville is sparkling.
Vanderbilt is rebuilding this year under head coach James Franklin. He has this team playing over their heads, believing they can compete in the SEC. Perhaps they will. They do for about 3 quarters. Unfortunately, a lot of football can be played in that extra 15 minutes.
The Dores will lose 17-13. They sure played well. They played with confidence and if a late pass interference call had gone their way, who knows?
This weekend it begins. Relish it. Enjoy it. Go to your local watering hole and talk smack. Or just sit back on your couch and breathe it in.
Football season is here.
Thank Goodness.
