You know what’s crazy? I’ll tell you what’s crazy™
Breviloquence: It means the Brevity of Speaking. Shortness of duration; especially shortness or conciseness of expression.
The opposite of this is Prolixity: extended to great, unnecessary, or tedious length; long and wordy.
These are the Ying and Yang of my writing existence. Too Much versus Too Little.
When I write, words pour into my skull. I type fast. The words that fill my head have to go somewhere. The words, the thoughts, the colors of meaning and flashes of nuance are like water filling a sink basin. They flow from the spigot, washing into the bowl, filling and splashing and pouring upon themself. If the rush is too forceful, full of prolixity and excess, then the over flow may not be capable of dispensing the accumulating volume. As the water rises, it overwhelms the space and begins to drain over the smooth edge, washing onto the floor.
And so it is with words and the basin of my mind.
When the flow of words is excessive, the outlet to release them must be sufficient. Unlike the sink, holding a finite volume, this white page with the blinking cursor is infinite.
That’s the blessing and the curse. The Ying and the Yang.
To some, I write too much.
Try and write less, I’ve heard.
This is an interesting problem for a writer.
Many writers stare at the white page and say, Now What?
I’ve heard that many writers stare at this void and wonder, where do I begin, what should I do, what exercise is relevant to produce the flow of thoughts.
I look at the white page and say, OK, pull back on the reins, slow your roll, boy.
For me, it’s the equivalent of going to a buffet and not eating till you get sick.
Sure you could have 5 plates of bacon, but should you?
Breviloquence. It means less is more. It means letting the cursor blink and allowing the white void to remain pure.
