You know what’s crazy? I’ll tell you what’s crazy.™
The Whitney Houston funeral.
I’m watching morning news and it is a wall to wall news-gasm of the Whitney Houston Funeral.
Anchors are seated on portable sets outside the church.
The ceremony is being promoted like the Super Bowl.
I half way expect a segment on what tailgaters outside the church are bar-b-queing and what tastes better on a Ritz Cracker.
This funeral brought to you by Doritos. It’s kind of disgusting.
Breathless reporters will tell me that Streets are closed, crowds are gathering, guest lists are exclusive, and Kevin Costner will speak.
Will Bobby Brown show up? Where will his possee sit? Anybody got a metal detector at the door?
Enough all ready.
I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I’m tired of the non stop Whitney-a-thon.
As you know. The Diva died last week, found in a bath tub. It is suspected that drugs and or alcohol somehow played a role.
It’s a sad story to be sure, and it deserves media attention, and it has received plenty.
It’s been a non stop week long eulogy. Frankly I’m all Whitney’d out. 5 straight days is about enough.
I’m weary of hearing about the voice, greater than any voice in all recorded history.
Somehow this bothers me too.
I was around at the height of WH and I realize she is amazingly talented, but the greatest voice to ever force air through a set of vocal chords?
I wonder how Aretha Franklin feels? Barbara Streisand? Elvis? Bing Crosby?
Don’t get me wrong. I think Whitney Houston’s voice is powerful. Her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner during the Gulf War is an iconic moment. Her voice inspired rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air. She owned that moment like American ground forces owned the Iraqi desert on their way to Baghadad.
Whitney Houston was beautiful – a true super star.
BUT…I’ve had enough.
NBC has been non stop. The New Hope Baptist Church is ground zero on a Saturday morning news cycle where apparently not much else is going on.
CNN is more intense. The network is trying to make this its story. The Big Story.
The church seats 1500. I’m not sure that a football stadium would be big enough to accomodate all the fans who would have come. So the funeral is live on CNN and it is web cast for the world to see.
I wonder if soldiers in the hills of Afghanistan will stop to watch the ceremony on their smart phones. Maybe it’s a welcome respite from getting your ass shot at 24/7.
During the ceremony, Kevin Costner will speak eloquently, passionately. He talks about how great she was in this one movie.
Ground breaking performers like Stevie Wonder sing. Teary eyed artists like Alicia Keyes sniffs during her song.
As the reporter says in her voice over; “Whitney had a voice that grabbed a hold of you and tugged at you.”
I don’t know that I ever felt that way, but I will say her passing is sad. It’s sad for her family, for her daughter, for her fans.
Ultimately, the funeral lasts longer than a Stanley Kubrik film festival. And Bobby Brown ends up leaving early somehow staining the memory of his ex wife and the mother of his daughter.
Rest in Peace Whitney Houston.
Thanks for giving me chills at the Super Bowl so many years ago.
and that is crazy.
