You know what’s crazy. I’ll tell you what’s crazy™
The senselessness of it all.
A 7 year old girl dies in front of her entire family. She runs behind a pick up truck that is backing up. The child slips in the gravel and ends up under the vehicle. In the time it takes to blink, in the time it takes for a momma’s heart to break, the truck tire rolls over the child’s skull.
“She probably never felt a thing,” the police chief tells me holding back emotions.
The chief saw the tragedy unfold. That’s because it happened at a birthday party and the girl’s grandmother was actually videotaping the horrific incident.
OMG.
Grandma videotaped her grand daughter being crushed to death.
That’s as terrible as it gets.
How senseless.
The child smiled like an angel on loan from heaven.
And in the time it takes to whisper, she’s dead.
She liked to draw and play with her younger brother, her father tells me over the phone.
“She loved the outdoors,” her daddy tells me, his throat filling with emotions, his eyes filling with tears. “I’m heart broken,” he says.
Senseless.
The man driving the truck didn’t mean to do it. He was simply backing up.
Bam. In a moment, the child was under the truck, under the tire.
The man has a prior history with DUI’s. He admits he had been drinking when the child was hit. Police say he didn’t appear to be impaired. Toxicology will prove them right. The man’s BAC comes back at 0%
Everyone is surprised, but the police will have no option but to rule this a terrible accident.
Senseless.
“She was just a quiet, sweet little girl,” the great aunt will tell me. “He got in the car. He didn’t see her. And things happen.”
Things Happen.
Yes they F@@@ing do!
The child died in front of her mother and father and grandparents and aunts and uncles.
Can you even imagine?
That’s what it’s like to go to hell and that’s the penance you pay.
One minute you’re asking your baby if she wants more birthday cake.
The next minute you are calling 911 and deciding on funeral arrangements.
So senseless.
So many of us think we have stuff going on in our lives that we can’t handle.
We let little things bug us. We act like these little things are all consuming things.
So many of us sweat the small stuff.
So many of us let insignificant matters obfuscate our thoughts, change our life direction, dictate our emotions.
Stop it.
You need to count your blessings that your children are alive and well.
If you don’t have cancer, if you don’t live in a cardboard box in front of the bus station, then you are ok.
If you think you have problems, I have the number of a daddy planning a funeral today for a little girl that should be getting a lunch box and crayons for the 2nd grade.
So Freaking Senseless.
Why?
Why do children die?
What exactly is the master plan?
Cosmic senselessness.
Go hug your kids and don’t worry about the things you think are important.
The windshield wiper scrapes. The diamond lane is full of people with one passenger. My vacuum cleaner’s suction hose is loose.
So what.
You may think these things are important, but they aren’t.
They are just things.
Life’s too short to waste the time.
Before you know it, you’ll be dead.
Sadly for some families, that day is today.
Senseless.
